Cuba's national pastime has been keeping 50s vintage cars running.
The only guy who makes money off an old beater is the guy who sells it to the guy who will restore it. I used to restore vintage Spanish dirt bikes and discovered I was working for minimum wage when I did sell one. Most of my sales were back to the guy I bought my parts from.....what a racket. There's a point at which a car can't be restored without after-market parts and that destroys it's value to a purist. Pull a wheel bearing off an axle enough times and you can kiss that axle goodbye. The chassis and frame on a beater that's been used as a taxi will never roll straight again without being re-fabricated. Engine cylinders won't take more than one oversize piston before they wear out and banana peels in a transmission probably won't get you down to your local Napa dealer. I wouldn't touch a repatriated Cuban relic.
