Acting FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton has suspended payments to New York City for migrant housing after Elon Musk claimed that FEMA spent $59 million on luxury hotels for illegal migrants[1][2][6]. Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency, said the money was intended for disaster relief and that his team would demand a clawback to recoup the funds[1][2][3]. In response, Hamilton stated that the payments were suspended and the employees who authorized them would be disciplined[2][3].

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that four FEMA employees were fired for circumventing leadership and unilaterally making the payments for hotels for migrants in New York City[5][7][9]. According to New York City, the city received $81 million in federal government reimbursements last week, including $19 million for direct hotel costs[1]. New York City's spokeswoman Liz Garcia stated that the city has never paid luxury rates and that the vast majority of hotels are outside Manhattan[1][10]. According to a 2024 city comptroller report, the government has paid on average $152 a night for rooms[1][10]. In comparison, 5-star hotels in Manhattan for the coming weekend run from $400 a night to well over $1,000[1].
