Any other defendant would have spent time in jail prior to the outcome of the trials for repeated violations of gag orders and for making insulting, threatening remarks towards officers of the court. He was afforded the right to a vigorous defense, to appeal every ruling, and to make repeated, frivolous motions designed to delay the outcome of his trials. Only his political status prevented him from going to jail.
