Fatah Cracks Down on Hamas in West Bank

The war against Hamas is taking place not only in the Gaza Strip, but in the West Bank as well, Palestinians said on Thursday.

Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority security forces, they noted, had stepped up their crackdown on Hamas supporters and figures in the West Bank since the beginning of Operation Cast Lead.

The latest anti-Hamas measures in the West Bank, which are being carried out in coordination with the IDF and under the supervision of US security experts, are designed to foil any attempt by the movement to overthrow the PA.

Hamas claims that the PA had already arrested more than 400 of its supporters in the West Bank prior to the IDF offensive in Gaza.

In the Nablus area alone, more than 200 Hamas supporters were rounded up by the PA in the past two weeks, a Hamas representative in the West Bank said.

The anti-Hamas campaign in the West Bank is taking place not only on the ground, but also in the PA-controlled media that continues to blame Hamas for the "massacres" in Gaza.

Tayeb Abdel Rahim, a senior aide to Abbas, on Thursday accused Hamas of holding the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip hostage. "Hamas is attempting to become the main decision-maker on the Palestinian arena," he said. "Hamas is exploiting the Israeli massacres against our people to strengthen its position."

They pointed out that Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal, based in Damascus, has repeatedly appealed to the West Bank Palestinians to launch a third intifada against the PA leadership.

What I found especially interesting about this article is that the security crackdown on Hamas is being led by Fayyad, not by Abbas, which may mean that Fayyad will be Abbas' successor. That would make him the first Palestinian leader with no history of terrorism. Imagine that: the Palestinians united behind a pro western technocrat who is an advocate for peaceful negotiations with Israel for a two state solution.

Wouldn't that be a nice change. Interesting point. I hadn't realized it.

Good to see

Fatah and it's leaders are nothing but traitors and sell outs to the Palestanian people and their cause.

Fatah grew out of Arafat's now defunct PLO.

The PLO was totally corrupt and did nothing but steal from the people.

Fatah has sold out to IsraHell and the ZioNazis.

That's why in a fair and legal election, Hamas beat out Fatah in Gaza.

The average Palestanian person hates Fatah and backs Hamas

You're an idiot. People of your mentality will be wiped out soon enough. Arabs in the West Bank are too busy being employed, having a regular income and living their lives to worry about hating Israel. The only people who hate Israel are the crazies in Gaza who elected Hamas. Terrorism struck the final nail in its coffin on September 11th. Within 10-20 years, all forms of radical Islam will be so small or dead, it will be irrelevant.

Within 10-20 years there will be a Gap, a Starbucks and an Olive Garden in the West Bank which will then be known as Palestine. Arabs will be employed, they will make money, they will have big, flat screen TVs and terrorism will be looked at by Arab worlds much like Germany looks at the Nazi regimie today.

It's also a lie. Hamas wouldn't even win in the Gaza if the election were held today, Fatah would.

I think it's time the Arabs chose a political party that did not have a history of violence against Israel. Even Abbas himself was involved with Black September. If the Arabs truly want peace, they know where to get it. I don't know much about this Fayyad character, but it seems as though he is Western educated. Which is good for us.

I don't think the entire world should follow our economic model system, though of Capitalism. Capitalism is great to a certain extent, it keeps its dezinens mindless and happy. But a major world economic collapse will happen within the next 100 years or so and if the Arabs are more poor then than they are now, they will revert to terrorism. Look at Russia for example... they tried capitalism in the 1990s and their economy was in a major depression. At least under communism they ate. I think America should be careful about spreading democracy around the world. What works for us, may not work for others.

Seriously, do you really find Hamas a better government then Fatah?
You d rather live in Gaza now then on the West-Bank?

If anyone can be compared with the Nazis then it will be Hamas, who is asking for all muslims to attack Jews. And is the only party that is killing civilians while openly saying it does it on purpose.

So the average palestinian wants war with Israel?
What are they wining about then?
Are they whining about Hamas that can't protect them, then?
Why does the average palestinian then not move to Gaza, instead of wanting to leave from it?

I d rather have a government that is corrupt then one that tries to kill me with a war it wages with the lives of their own people, even the "IsraHell" government is corrupt.

You live in a dream world son!!

Perhaps it is a dream that most peace-loving Muslims and Jews share together and will work together to coordinate.

Until then, 300,000 Jewish settlers in the West Bank will soon turn to 1 million. Until the Arabs show that they can hold land responsibly, they should not be entitled to it.

It's about time. Maybe some headway can be made if they clean up their own internal mess.

And you KNOW it's bad when even Fatah thinks Hamas is too much.

Looks like Israel is going to stop it, if Hamas doesn't blow it:

Israeli Cabinet Appears Ready to Declare a Gaza Cease-Fire

By ETHAN BRONNER and MARK LANDLER
JERUSALEM — Israel’s security cabinet is expected to meet Saturday night to declare a cease-fire in Gaza and will keep its forces there in the short term while the next stage of an agreement with Egypt is worked out.

“It looks as if all the pieces of the puzzle are coming together,” Mark Regev, a spokesman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said Friday. “There will be discussions tomorrow morning, and it looks like a cabinet meeting will take place tomorrow night. Everyone is very upbeat.”

Meanwhile, Israeli tank fire killed two boys at a United Nations-run school on Saturday in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahiya, a U.N. official told Reuters. Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesman for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, said two brothers had been killed and 14 people had been wounded in the attack, including the boys' mother. An Israeli army spokesman said that he was checking the report.

The most promising element for bringing the three-week conflict to a close occurred in Washington on Friday, where Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni of Israel signed an understanding on a range of steps the United States would take to stem the flow of new arms to Hamas from the Egyptian Sinai, mostly via tunnels.

The agreement came on the last business day of the Bush administration and set the stage for the Obama administration to play a more active role in resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict. President-elect Barack Obama and Secretary of State-designate Hillary Rodham Clinton signed off on the plan, the State Department said....
