The "thang" is instilling very basic ideas and ideals to children.

Like awareness of self, awareness of others, and the necessity of self-support.

Only things I ever told my kids (before and after my D.I.V.O.R.C.E.) was-

be careful with whom you associate, focus on a means of self-support, and wear a rubber.
