Explained: How Cavalry Disappeared From The Military (Think World War I)

The Marine Corp should have disappeared by the 1890's, too, but they have a massive propaganda and lobbying machine so they're still here, inventing missions for themselves, long after sailing ships did away with snipers. Every time they feel threatened they can run to Hollywood and have them crank out yet another De Jarheads Save Da Woild!!! fantasy action flick showing dumbasses mowing down assorted 'foreignerz n stuff' in ridiculous numbers and vehicles with small gas tanks blowing up like the magazines full of 8 inch Navy gun ammo.
wrong and WRONG
..the Marines are the go to force
..the are constantly deployed on ships!!!!!!!!!! with Ospreys/gunships/choppers/AV8s [ for now ] --ready for a great variety of missions!!! READY --ON CALL--in the Med and Pacific
rescue
embassy security
standard battles
disaster relief
Spec Ops
etc etc

...these are battalions ---NOT in the US ---that can sail all over the world!
..along with that, they have support from carriers--that can sail all over the world--and are on call

....I was on the USS Inchon 1987 when the idiots kidnapped a lot of Americans in Beirut ...we had Delta Force on our ship.....we had the force/equipment/etc for a great variety of OPTIONS
.....the ship was a SAFE/''secret'' ''airport'' for our choppers and Delta Force Choppers
Delta just couldn't place their choppers in Beirut/etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ETC to infinity

AV-8s?

My nephew maintains the F-35B. They are already deploying on LHDs and LHAs.

They do nothing that the Army can't do on a bigger and better scale to boot. They do have cute dress uniforms though, they look like a high school marching band uniform, so I guess we could make them a big giant marching band or something and keep them around D.C. to impress the tourists.

hahhahahahhahahh
....THANK YOU! --you just pointed out you are wrong--that's another thing--the USMC Battalion Landing Teams are a perfect ''one size fits all'''...they have hitting power and they can fit a force for small or ''larger'' options
..they have:
AAVs or small boats for landings--and choppers...Ospreys,etc
Arty/anti-tank vehicles/etc
can land by sea or air

NO--the Army doesn't have the experience

....AND by not having a specifically appointed force for these much different missions, you won't quality
..
the bigger the force, the harder it is to get quality

hahhahaahahhah--you are just babbling--stop

.....a lot of the problems we face/faced are SMALL unit operations---unfit for a large '''army''' force

April 3, 2020 article about the Marine Corps future according to the Corps Commandant.

Marine Commandant: Less A Second Land Army, More Light Amphib Ships
"You'll see some significant changes” in the Navy report “regarding the portion of the fleet that supports maneuver of Marines and the expeditionary elements of that," Gen. David Berger says.

WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Mark Esper has been “very supportive” of bold new Marine Corps plans to jettison its tanks, cut artillery units, slash the number of helicopter squadrons, and rethink the role F-35s might play, Marine Commandant Gen. David Berger told reporters this week, suggesting he’s just getting started in remaking the Corps.

“We’re more at the beginning than we are at the end” of carving out deep changes in the force structure of the Corps to meet the challenges of Chinese and Russian military modernization, Berger said.

Cavalry had been a crucial part of armies since antiquity, beginning soon after the domestication of the horse. The Greeks and Romans were skilled horsemen centuries before the invention of the stirrup. Horses played a crucial role during the age of chivalry during the Middle Ages, and proved crucial in the Mongol's expansion from Asia to Europe, and later with the Spanish exploration and conquest of the Americas.

In countless wars around the world over the centuries, cavalry was a flexible multipurpose force that offered greater mobility than infantry, while it performed long-range reconnaissance and security for commanders. During battle, cavalry secured and protected the flanks and rear of the infantry line, and could be used to counter enemy cavalry or counter an enemy infantry attack.

That's an interesting article right up till the end when the author says tanks go the wayside due to millennials not driving.
The Greeks may have used cavalry as a part of its main force but the Roman cavalry was a auxiliary unit. Used mostly for scouting, skirmishes and harassing retreating enemy.
