Europe calls to prepare for US withdrawal from NATO after Trump's return

9 Mar 2024 ~~ by Oleksandra Zimko

NATO diplomats believe that Europe needs to prepare for a possible US withdrawal from the alliance if Donald Trump returns to the White House.
The prospect of Trump's return to power after the US election is raising concerns in Europe about continued US support for Ukraine and NATO allies. According to The Telegraph, diplomats in NATO countries believe that European capitals need to prepare a plan and review their current defense capabilities.
One European diplomat told The Telegraph that Trump's controversial statements, including his refusal to help allies in the event of a Russian attack, are "a concern."
"Nobody knows what he's going to do next," the diplomat said, adding that NATO countries should develop a scenario to reduce the alliance's dependence on the United States.
A diplomat from another NATO country said that countries like Britain should take even more of a lead in European security, as a possible U.S. withdrawal from NATO would create a "massive gap."

Commentary:
What do the NATO countries expect from a strong president?
For decades Europe NATO signatories have dragged their feet in meeting their Treaty responsibilities contributing to their own safety. They've relied on the largess and funding from the U.S.A.
Now that Trump has called them on their lack of participation in Defense of Europe they're shaking in their boots.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has been their wake-up call and this has made all of Europe shaky.
US in NATO or not, it is high time Europe gets ready to defend themselves.

These people are too Gdamned stupid. No wonder Europe is in trouble. Did they see on Trumps list on his website "promise to leave NATO"? They are just fear mongering as the limp wristed tended to do.

First, Trump will NOT leave NATO, he will instead demand nations pay their 2%. Is that wrong to demand? He wants to sell U.S weapons and systems and also wants all nations to be committed to the alliance if it is to remain as such.

Second, even if he did for some reason do so, it would only be for four years as the next president would return. Also, the pressure from both parties would make it near impossible for him to do so.

Trump knows this. Anyone with half a working brain in Europe knows this. They are so afraid of their own shadow and uninterested in committing their OWN tax dollars and soldiers to the cause (outside of France and England, though France may be just under 2%) that they continue to scream this. It really isn't about the Trump threat, but their desire for expanded global socialism.

He isn't leaving NATO, I would bet my right arm on this.

Guess this means they have no plans on paying their bills. The piggy bank will be closed and they don't like it. They sound like ungrateful children. All they have to do is pay their bills, NATO stays.

Trump can't dictate who pays and who doesn't.

Why can't Hungary pay 2%? Piggy bank must be empty, right?
Even if they all pay 2% it is unfair to the US because our 2% is way bigger than their 2%'s and that is for us defending them. And, most of them don't even pony up their 2%. If they want us to defend them then they should pay us for it. If they are thinking if Trump wins NATO will be gone, then they should pony up their 2% so they don't have to worry about it. Hell, we're paying for Ukraine, and they aren't even in NATO.

There is NO obligation...

"NATO guidelines encourage all members to spend 2 percent of their respective country’s GDP on their own military defense, so that each member can defend itself to a certain degree without relying too often on pooled NATO forces and equipment. In 2014, NATO leaders came to an agreement that members who spend under that 2 percent benchmark are to work towards reaching that goal within a decade"

See the word "encourage"

Trump won't win anything. He's a LOSER.

I do not believe that Trump wants to leave NATO, He wants NATO countries to pay their fair share in their mutual defense.
Something that especially Germany and several other countries have failed to do...
Its an election year and the democrats are pulling out their "woulda, coulda, shoulda" just like they did in 2020. "Trump would" "Covid could" "Everyone should" No reality in any of it.

How about Trump's buddy Orban. Does he pay his "fair share?"
You tell us. Trump has made it clear that member states should pay their fair share. I'm sure he'd treat him the same way as any other deadbeat country if they failed to pay. Trump isn't the only former POTUS that has called for delinquent member states to pay up. Try again moron.

This would be prudent regardless. We won't be there forever and there are for countries alone in NATO Europe with larger GDPs.

I dont think the US is going to withdraw from NATO if trump is elected

My guess it that the feckless euros will pony up more money for their own defense

Fuck off pinhead. Trump is FOS and hasn't a clue just like you don't have a clue what the alliance is about.

An alliance exists for the benefit of all members. Members who do not pay their fair share are DEADBEATS who exist off the efforts of others. You know the type, you see it everyday when you look into the mirror. Moron.
