I recently watched the 1974 movie adaptation of the book which starred Martin Sheen. This got me very interested in delving deeper into him, his case, and the apparent injustice perpetrated by the US Army at that time. My thinking is had thorough mental and psychological evaluations been far more thorough then, I believe he would've been able to serve in a non-combat field.
 
He was a deserter, he admitted it and desertion was punishable by death at the time. The argument seems to be that none of the other deserters were executed.
