And I am sure similar stories happen all across the other 49 states, plus territories.

EBT Story: Very common in Hawaii.

EBT recipients go into grocery stores on first day of the month and buy Spam by the case. Some stores limit the number of cases any one person can buy.

They take the Spam to "Mom & Pop" vendors, some street vendors and some with rundown storefront operations in poor neighborhoods.

The vendors buy the Spam at a 50% discount because they use it in so many preparations.

The sellers the use the cash for drugs and alcohol.

Between the 3rd or 4th day of the month, and about mid-month, it is hard to find Spam on the shelf of stores in poor neighborhoods.

The problem clearly isn't because they are stupid. In fact, they managed to find an unlimited source for a product they wish to sell for a profit. <-- Capitalism in action.

I only blame them for being the criminals they are, for doing this.

However, our anger should be directed at the Democrats in office who have set all this up to be just like it is.

.

Unbelievable. I think 90% of the Spam eaten in the US is consumed in Hawaii. My Japanese American family ate so much spam, I wanted to choke.

Teriyaki Spam on rice was there at every family holiday dinner.

Very apt symbolism for the way the bottom of the bowl operates in Hawaii.

From what I hear, they practically worship the spiced ham. lol

If it is so common, how come you could not find a single link reported in any news organization substantiating this fraud? It could be true. Who knows? Who is dumb enough to depend on unsupported stories from some unidentified message board duffus, called shipwreckedcrew?

This is a recycling of an old racist urban myth.

I’ve heard variations on this story for decades.

So, you think a post on X written by someone you never heard of and know nothing about is “news”?

I'm sure it happens. We used to have people wanting us to put our purchases on their EBT and give them money for their car "out of gas down the road" until the shopping center started hiring uniformed cops to monitor the parking lot. There was a liquor store in the same strip mall so I assume that is what they were wanting for fuel.

Capitalism in action.

Capitalism doesn’t entail the state giving you commodities that you can trade for alcohol and drugs on a black market

That is more reminiscent of another for of government-controlled economics.

I liked the canned beef they had back in the day, my mom would make huge pot of beef stew from it and would can half of it.

She bought off of the "poors" next to my grandmother.

Capitalism doesn't really care where the material comes from. Only that they don't have to add it to the debit side of the ledger.

The model you showed would be valid if it showed the politican or corrupt cop taking the cut he is owed for providing the resource.

There are probably five or six drug addicts on the islands doing this, so everyone assumes it is widespread.

If they are clever enough to do this, they could also probably hold a job down.

The law of unintended consequences:
  1. Lawmakers are bound to assure the welfare payments they give out only be spent on what THEY think people should buy!
  2. People on program find workaround so to create trade which barters them drug and booze money in the end anyway.
  3. So, restriction of booze and drugs backfires, probably doing more harm than good. The state probably sells more drugs and booze this way in the end than if it just let people buy what they wanted directly.
