DVD Ripper?

Hi guys...Do any of you know about DVD Rippers? I don't know much computers...even though I work in a computer lab 10hours a day! LOL Anyway....you know how you can take a CD and convert songs into MP3 formats? Well...can you do that with DVDs and watch them on computers? If so...can anyone tell me what kind of software would I need to buy or is it illegal? I just want to bring my DVDs and play them on my computer instead of bringing my laptop every day. Thanks!!
