DUBAI // A team led by a Dubai plastic surgeon will perform free operations on children with cleft lips and acid burn victims in Indian villages next month.

The costs
Cleft lip and palate patients:

Cost: Dh20,000 is the average cost in the UAE for reconstructive surgery for cleft lip and palates. This includes hospital charges, medication and follow-up consultations.

Recovery: Surgery is usually required when the child is three months, and later at 1 year old, 2, 5, 7, and 18 years of age.

Acid Burn Patients:

Cost: More than Dh15,000 for each operation for various stages of reconstructive surgery. This does not include medication and follow-up consultation charges.

Recovery: Depends on the individual case. Could require 10 to 15 operations, but some require more than 30.
