That had nothing to do with the west, only their very strict interpretation of the Quran. This is why the Sunnis are fighting the Shias. They consider them not true Muslims. No matter where Islam becomes the dominant society, non-Muslims are never safe.
Plenty like to blame ISIS on the west, but in reality, it came out of a strict interpretation of the Quran's teachings. One just has to read what ISIS has published as its reasons for killing non-Muslims. It's our western culture that it despises.

I lived in a Muslim country for a couple years when I was a pre-teen (because of my Dad's job) and what you said about non-Muslims never being safe wasn't the case in our experience. In fact, they were hospitable and we never had a problem. Of course that was many years ago, and our foreign policy was different back then, so, it's probably very different now.

But anyway, my point was that people need to be careful anytime there's a major news story. We're living in a time of great deception, and the wise thing to do is question everything. Plus, propaganda is basically legal now, in the US.
