Because scammers can have a bogus number that looks official, and with the awful customer service these days, you can mistake someone on the other end as being genuine.

This guys experience is the opposite, he used a legitimate phone number and still got scammed. It is always best to fix these things in person, with an agent, than trying to over the phone. This situation is bizarre, and United is not providing any answers.

Phone hacking?
Yea, sounds like it. They just transferred the call from an agent to a scammer.

Also, airport charging stations are now targeted by "skimmers", who somehow are able to extract data from your phone/laptop when plugged in, or they install malware. I have more confidence with my MacBook and iPhone to not be affected, and have not had any problems.

Phone/Web scam

During the pandemic my printer was not working. I tried like HECK to get a hold of Canon but nobody picked up. I continued to try to get a hold of them. I saw a website mentioning Canon but when I called, they answered right away! (first red flag) The guy started talking to me and he never asked me about my printer. He said we need have you click on this link. You could see it was a remote access link. He said we need to see your computer. I said, "That's not happening. I am not giving you access to my computer. This is about my printer you idiot." He said "Then we can't help you." I said, "No you can't and I hung up on him. I went back to the website and it was misspelled, something they are hoping nobody will notice. :P
