The devil went down to Georgia. He bet a golden fiddle against Johnny's soul.
According to the song, Johnny won the golden fiddle from the devil. Do you really think that's how it went down. Since when has the devil made a fair bet? He doesn't play fair, and he sure isn't going to let Johnny have a chance at winning that golden fiddle.

Don't go making bets with the devil, cause the devil is going to win even if he has to cheat. But Johnny won the bet you say...according to the song. Well, that is exactly what the sly old devil wants everyone to think. He wants everyone to think Johnny won that gold fiddle so that when the devil comes to make a bet with you, you might just think you have a chance of winning.

The devil actually won Johnny's soul that day. The devil let Johnny hang onto that fiddle until it is time for the devil to collect on Johnny's soul, and then the devil will get the golden fiddle back again. Meanwhile, millions of people are singing along to a song that says Johnny won, helping the devil win more bets and claim even more souls.

??? And, what does this have to do with anything? It's your opinion but Jesus Christ won the battle against Satan. So did Moses. So did Joseph Smith...Hang on to Jesus Christ and you can too!

Now you have the right idea. Jesus defeated the devil by going to the cross and that is the only way for us to have victory over the devil. Johnny on his own isn't beating the devil in a fiddle playing contest.

In case you weren't aware already, the story continued years later. I love watching Travis Tritt play the devil. :D :D :D

God bless you and the musicians who are still here always!!!

P.S. On July 6th, it will be five years since we had to let go of Charlie Daniels. :( :( :(

I didn't know about that one. That said, the devil is the father of lies. The devil doesn't want everyone knowing that he really won those fiddle playing contests.
