I don't share your ambivalence regarding education as a public good.

Thomas Jefferson was a strong proponent of education, viewing it as a vital component of democracy. He famously stated, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” This reflects his belief that an educated citizenry is crucial for the preservation of liberty and the effective functioning of government. ​

On a personal level, education enhances one's earning potential. The residents of the better-educated states are generally more prosperous.

Of course, I do not "worship" education because I recognize its value, to the individual, the community, and the nation, nor do I pretend to know how Jefferson would regard a current STEM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) although, as a polymath, I suspect that his regard for learning would encompass those disciplines as well as the humanities.

His recognition that knowledge is a benison to the individual as well as to society was succinctly expressed by his boast,
”Ours are the only farmers who can read Homer.”
