I don't share your ambivalence regarding education as a public good.
On a personal level, education enhances one's earning potential. The residents of the better-educated states are generally more prosperous.
Of course, I do not "worship" education because I recognize its value, to the individual, the community, and the nation, nor do I pretend to know how Jefferson would regard a current STEM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) although, as a polymath, I suspect that his regard for learning would encompass those disciplines as well as the humanities.You also don't share an understanding of what actual "education" is.
Jefferson would not recognize what you all worship as "education" today.
