Trump utterly dominates the news, and he has made that be so by saying one outlandish thing after another. In the world of news, outlandish and sensational sells more papers and garners more viewers than does staid and sensible.

It's fully within Trump's control as to what the media will most heavily cover, and as an entertainer, he knows that quite well. Trump's campaign so far has followed to the letter the dictum "there's no such thing as bad publicity." Well, as we daily hear Trump and his allies griping about the media coverage, it appears there may indeed be such a thing as bad publicity. Context is everything.
