With President Donald Trump’s announcement Tuesday that he will be launching an investigation into the high cost of California High Speed Rail fulfilling a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) promise made late last year, many are celebrating.

Not the Fresno Bee with this absurd headline: Trump pledges to investigate California high speed rail. Is it actually over budget?

Let me count the ways.

Originally estimated to cost $33 billion in 2008 with a San Francisco to Los Angeles line to open by 2028, the California high speed rail system has since ballooned to $128 billion, and $135 billion+, with an estimated partial completion somewhere in the late 2030’s. And last year, the California High Speed Rail Authority (CHRSA) actually confirmed that the system still needed $100 billion to link up San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Even while Jerry Brown was still governor, the true cost of High Speed Rail was estimated to be closer to $350 billion… if it ever actually gets built.

So, it's on track to cost approximately a quarter of a trillion dollars by the time it's "done." And the return on the investment will be?.....I'm waiting.

It's amazing that they've gotten this far without anyone being hung from a lamppost. Talk about telling the taxpayers to eat cake.

It was a great way for connected democrats to sell land they bought for massive profits.....At least there's that. ;)

yes sure its a waste, but it was Democrats leading the way in DEI... look at all the fair contracts that were created! Is that passage of time really important? or is it a construct of white dominated society?
What is more important? People getting somewhere on time on a train? or equity? Sure every 21 year old hoping to commute from SF to L.A. for work will be collecting social security (thanks to Trump) before this ever happens...and Elon Musk will probably build a settlement on mars before that happens but...... that 135 billion has created 15,000 jobs! Its amazing what a Democrat government can pull off... they even managed to roughly start this thing going North to South..impressive!

Will Trump be the politician who has the balls to shut this thing down?

Even if it were to go like gangbusters and be complete within five years, would it be used enough to justify its existence? Would it be cheaper to fly? To drive a car? Certainly.

And the thing with high-speed rail is, the more stops you make, the less high-speed it becomes. Ultimately it won't be any quicker than a car.

The sad thing is that in the forties the Southern Pacific Coast Daylight powered by a steam engine could make the trip almost as fast as the currently planned version of the “high speed” rail can do and it ran from downtown Los Angeles to Downtown San Francisco on a much more scenic route along the water front.

First off it is California so of course it was going to be expensive. Second it is California so of course it was going to not be finished any time soon. Third it is California so they will believe and follow what ever the those in power tell them. Forth it is California so of course the politicians and high rollers are going to pocket some of the money.

They should investigate the Boring Company tunnels that don't exist too, you know, the one's California gave Musk millions for.

Indeed!
Trump Administration Launches Audit of California High-Speed Rail

The Neo-Marxist Democrat controlled project was designed as a money laundry to recycle taxpayers bucks to Newsom’s big donors and the usual Democrat interest groups. As such it’s been a roaring success.
There's no doubt that Newsom and the Neo-Marxist Democrats will fight Trump, Musk and Duffy to investigate and report their findings to the People.
This makes the Democrat's Boston Big Dig Boon Doggle appears like small potato's.

I can fly, roundtrip, from LAX to SFO for $78

Elon Musk's hyperdroop project received federal - tax payer - funding and then it went tits up and laid off all staff and shutdown.

You're all dingbats.

The scam was to pay DEM groups for hundreds and hundreds of millions in "studies" paperwork taking years. Then they donate a big chunk back to DEM coffers in the DNC. hope that helps.//

A lot of people retired in luxury off that graft.

... ballooning from $2.6 billion to nearly $15 billion ($24 billion, counting interest on the debt). It didn't simply take more time than expected; it was eight years behind schedule by the time it was done.

Trouble ahead
Trouble behind
and you know that notion
just crossed my mind
