Not much. More than one President has wanted to get rid of the department. It was originally set up for nuclear energy....but that's now covered by different regulatory agencies.

The biggest problem with nuke reactors is the waste and used fuel rods. The used fuel rods are good for reprocessing....but it currently is too expensive and complicated to do it as cheaply as buying new ones. Also....used fuel rods have lots of isotopes used for the production of nuclear weapons. But they are literally hot....as in 500⁰ F. They require 3 to 5 years minimum to cool down.

Dept of energy used to regulate all of that. The uranium is not worth much. The plutonium and tritium is. But tritium has a half life of just 12 years. (Why nuclear warheads are very expensive to maintain)

It's where Gerald Ford was parked temporarily when Nixon's administration was coming apart at the seams.
