According to the NYT, of which I can only see a blurb from Google:
Apr 7, 2023 — Becker served eight months of a two-and-a-half-year sentence for hiding and transferring money and assets during a bankruptcy proceeding.
Brat got off easy.
and how old were you in 1985?
Roughly ten years older than him.

Boris Becker?

Are you referring to a German former professional tennis player, tennis coach and a commentator. He was ranked as the world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Becker won 49 career singles and 15 doubles titles, including six singles majors: three Wimbledon Championships, two Australian Opens and one US Open. He also won 13 Masters titles, three year-end championships, an Olympic gold medal in men's doubles in 1992, and led Germany to two Davis Cup titles in 1988 and 1989. Becker is the youngest-ever winner of the men's singles Wimbledon title, a feat he accomplished aged 17 in 1985.

Nope, never heard of him.

Yes, I watched the final back then on TV.

In 1999, I got to see Boris in his final Wimbledon campaign.
My ticket was for Centre Court that day, so once our slate of matches were completed, I went out to Henman Hill to see him playing on the big screen which was broadcasting Becker's match from the old Court No. 2 (which I had a ticket for the previous day)

I remember the great Bjorn Borg, who retired at 26! He was crushing the tour and then he walked away in his prime, and never returned. He won multiple majors before he quit tennis.

Yes, I do remember Becker too.

...And? It was his 1st Major winning his 1st of 3 Chp. at Wimbledon at 17 yrs. old! The youngest winner at the time before Michael Chang came along to win the French Open in 1989! :p:stir:

Boris Becker is who inspired me to play tennis. I was never really that good at it, but I at least tried and made my high school team as a freshman, and it was because I saw him diving on the grass and do all kinds of amazing shit.

What is the point of this thread? I was a tennis player and am a tennis fan (sort of). I enjoyed watching Becker and players of his type (serve & volley).

As with a lot of retired athletes, he ran afoul of the law, illegally concealing his assets to protect them from the legitimate claims of his creditors.

But that cannot detract from his place in tennis history.

Do you remember Monica Seles?

She was the player who was stabbed during a match by some crazed fan, You never hear about her anymore, but she was rising thru the ranks to the very top, and believe that's where she was when it happened. She disappeared after that incident.
