Newspapers aren't much better today than they were then.The newspapers in Mark Twain's day had no "journalistic standards" or fact verification. That didn't come until the early 20th Century when schools of journalism were established.
A blatantly false story can be printed on Page 1 and the retraction printed a week later buried somewhere in the bowels of the newspaper that no one sees so the false story is the ones people will remember
