If you are talking about Tesla, he had a deal with Westinghouse that for every kw/hr of electricity (or something like that) sold or used through his AC system, he was owed a royalty of X amount. Whatever the deal was, when Westinghouse was putting his AC system together with Niagara Falls, he realized that it was such a good deal for Tesla that he stood to make almost no money! He would go broke paying Tesla his royalties. So he went to Tesla and appealed to him. Now, Tesla had this all down in black and white signed and agreed to, but he wanted to see the AC system built, so without consulting any attorneys or anyone, he relinquished his royalties and gave them completely up, giving up a fortune.

Had Tesla not done that, he would have died one of the richest men who ever lived and would have had money to build his wireless system and anything else he ever wanted to do, without needing to depend on grants from JP Morgan and others.

I tend to agree, my only fault with him is he had a poor head for business. First he let Edison screw him over, then he gave Westinghouse an unbelievable deal that cost him a fortune, and finally got screwed by JP Morgan because he depended on him for support he would not have needed had he not bartered so bad a deal with Westinghouse.

He was the total opposite of Edison: a consummate engineering researcher after pure experimentation whereas Edison was an idiot with no education but the drive to persue exhaustively any idea he thought he make a dime from.

Marconi still usually even gets credit for inventing the radio to this day despite the fact that Tesla did and had the patent records to prove it.
