I tested at Ft. Leonard Wood in the spring of 1963. While still in basic training I was offered a position training CBR. So, they must have been short of training personnel. I declined. I wanted no part of Ft. L.W.

I wondered, and you replied to the idea, if the lack of cadre was just in CA or widespread. I was drafted in January 1962 and had no idea of being appointed a platoon Sgt. It worked out well as I saw it. It resulted in me being sent to the leadership school at Monterey, CA. I did visit the museum at F. Leonard Wood and found it to be pretty good.

The Army was gearing up for Vietnam and needed to fill leadership roles asap.

We had a prior service spec5 who was my platoon sergeant. I went on to Ft. Sill, OK for artillery survey school, then off to Korea for 13-month tour. I finished up at Ft. Bliss, TX.
