key to being a good actor is you can do any look and be anyone,,

put a suit on him , cut his hair and wash his face he could be a completely different person,,

It depends on the actor. Many are based on good looks, others are based on unique looks. Some are based on pure acting ability. Steve Buscemi isnt pretty.

Looks and ability to pull off the role. A lady friend from my school days while in her 20's played a 80 something old peasant woman and got good reviews for her performance. It took over an hour of makeup.

First place I remember ever seeing Dabbs Greer was as the preacher on "Little House on the Prairie", but then my TV watching habits changed and I saw him, mostly in kindly every-man roles but also in a few bad guy roles on Westerns.

But I could never accept him as a bad guy. Versatile character actor.

You'd think it would have been easier to just use a real 80 year-old.

Often that matters a great deal. I have a friend who has had some TV rolls and a lot of commercials and his blessing and curse has always been that he is too wholesome looking. Hurts on the tv/movie side but has made some bank doing commercials.
