Watching the Leftist reactions to the disaster last night reminded me of an experience from my personal history. It is possible for people with differing viewpoints to see the same interaction and come away with opposite impressions.
I was the lead negotiator in a major contract negotiation many years ago. My employer was going to be the Contractor, and we were negotiating with lawyers for the project Owner. The law firm had prepared the contract document and it was totally one-sided, which their lead negotiator acknowledged early on.
My team was comprised of engineers, a couple top managers, and our Controller...way too many people, most of whom were bored to death. Furthermore, the negotiations took place on West Coast, starting at 6PM, so we were all tired and jet-lagged. The negotiations went on until after midnight, and we didn't get through the whole thing.
As we worked our way through the document, time after time, I told the other side that each provision was unacceptable, and we tried to work with the language to make it at least arguably balances. Hours and hours.
When we got out of the meeting, my boss asked me why I was being such a pain in the ass. I was dumbfounded. He had not recognized how bad the contract document was, so saw me as just being a stickler for meaningless details.
The project cratered the following day, when a couple other factors came to light that the project owner just couldn't live with.
So I guess it is possible for a Leftist to have seen that interview last night and not seen what a disaster it was for Harris. Of course, it is probably not that at all. It's Media people pretending to have seen something other than what they actually saw.
