As I recall, Democrat and Republican officials had to take action when there was no direction or leadership coming from the top. Memba "It's just one person coming from China", "We have it under control". Until the bodies started piling up. If only there had been a competent leader in the White House at the time (you know, like Hillary Clinton), and testing, quarantining, and messaging were all coordinated, who knows? Maybe all those lockdowns and restrictions wouldn't have been necessary. Maybe the blow to our economy would have been lessened. We'll never know. People saw Trump coast for three years on the accomplishments of his successor and then, the first minute his presidency is tested, he throws up all over his shoes. So they showed him the door. Just like they will next year.

Around here, home school is more of a dodge, than an education, but it keeps the truant attendance people off the parent's back, with their kid not going to class. Lots, probably most parents are totally unqualified to try to teach high school, algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry, economics, statistics, calculus, foreign languages, computer science, biology, though probably able to cope with history and maybe English. I had the pleasure of teaching high school algebra, after not having to deal with it (for the most part) since the 1980s. It sucked, even for me.

The interesting bit, is that Trump had a decent response early on... he shut down travel and seemed to be taking it seriously. But as soon as the press started hyping it, he pivoted. The one thing that Trump gets is that people are fed up with the liberal media, so he instinctively went against them. It wasn't, necessarily, a bad bet. Most of their "sky is falling" nonsense adds up to nothing. But in this case, it was a bet he lost.
