Dems Killed my favorite cigar shop

Sometimes it's not just small businesses that get squeezed due to increased taxes, fees, etc.

Several years ago the feds thought an easy revenue stream would be a drastic tax on new boat sales. Not sure now but think it kicked in around sales north of $200k. Their rationale I assume was folks who could afford such toys may not like it but they'd go along with it simply because of their desire to want that new boat.

All they succeeded in doing though was to bring the boat building industry in America to its knees. Lots of companies folded, downsized, or merged with others and whatnot. As a result lots of folks lost their jobs. Many potential buyers just dug in their heels and put off new purchases until the National Marine Manufacturers Association and others put enough heat on Washington to get the tax recinded, but even then many jobs were lost for good.

They're very slow learners in D.C.

Jillian, your ignorance of fundamental economics is breathtaking.

How much volume do you supposed he'd have to do just to make up for the increase in fees from $100 to 1,000 annually?

Solve for X

A man sells 2,000 $5 cigars for $10,000 worth of cigars annually

Current NYS cigar tax is 20% of wholesale price (I know, and they complain about insurance company profits). Ignoring other costs (Liberals never care about the costs others must bear) his wholesale cost is 7400 and the state tax is 1500 (I said Libs were funny about complaining about price gouging, right?), federal cigar tax is 100.

Federal Tax is 5 cents per cigar

His profits are $1,000

Along come Fucking retards at the federal and state government.

They increase his license fee from $100 to $1,000 dollar,
AND they increase the federal tax from 5 cents to 40 cents
AND the state increases the tax from 20% to 37%

With these facts, please answer the following:

Why do people vote for Democrats?

The better question is, if you hate paying such high taxes, why do you live in NY?

Just talking to the wife about a few things including a) moving and b) buying an AK-47.

We're packing our oldest off to Grad School in Italy for a year and the youngest has been 4.0 since he transferred back East and is a year from graduating.

Also, because of the quirky way I made income, I paid more in state taxes than I did in Federal, plus my property taxes exceed what my wife and I paid for our UES 2 BR apartment when we first met.

So yes, we will be moving out of this Blue state hell hole where my vote is canceled by the non-living.

And you were able to send your kid to a fancy grad school in Italy because you made more money here than you would have in some lesser place.

And when it comes to property taxes, the republicans (who until recently dominated town and county governments in Nassau and Suffolk counties) did nothing all those years to lower our property taxes which are among the highest in the country.

But I chalk it all up to the price of admission for living the New York lifestyle.

And as an added bonus, when retirement (which is not too far off) comes around, we'll be able to downsize and live practically anywhere we want and come out way ahead.

Not sure where you live, but look at the taxes and bullshit in the price of 1 gallon of gasoline. YOu'll probably be appalled.

Here in NY, the gas tax is about $.65 a gallon.

I used to live on Staten Island.... you could drive across the Goethels to Woodbridge and gas up for about $.40/gal less.

So, let's say you need 20 gallons of gas. At $.40 a gallon less, you're going to save $8.00.

Of course coming back into NY is going to cost you $8.00 in tolls on the Goethals. So there goes your savings. Factor in your time and aggravation and now you're in the hole. Even without the toll, you're saving a lousy eight bucks. If someone offered you $8.00 to drive to New Jersey would you take them up on it?

Doesn't sound like much of a plan unless you're trying to make some kind of stupid point.

Let's complete the little math exercise shall we?

7400 wholesale * 37% NYS tax = 10,138 cost, plus 40 cent Fed tax per 2,000 cigars (assume sales wont decrease with massive price increases (Dem Economics 101)) = 10,938, plus say its 1,000 license fee = 11,938/2000=

$6/per cigar just top pay costs (Dem hate profits) and when prices increase units sold decreases

In reality, say 12000 + 10% profit 13,200/ 1500 = 8.8/cigar

Vote Dem: Kill jobs and freedoms

Socialism at its worst. Unfortunately most people still don't understand how much of their Freedoms & Liberties are being taken away from them. Most are just ignorant or don't care. Mere cattle at this point. I feel for ya on this one. I think the worst is yet to come though.

Buy them on line like everyone else does.

Not good advice, here is why?
That too will also be taxed vigorously. I know a woman that bought cigarettes online for 2 years and she told me that, "the government hunted her down like a dog, to collect the current tax on cigarettes". She paid, she said, because she was scared.

Among states and cities targeting online buyers:
• The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue sent letters to 63 people last month, demanding payment of $1.35 per pack they bought from two Web sites, spokeswoman Stephanie Weyant says. By Friday, 44 had paid.
• The Ohio Department of Taxation sent letters to 25 customers of one Internet vendor, seeking unpaid taxes ranging from $400 to $800, spokesman Gary Gudmundson says. Tax collectors there plan to send 1,000 more letters.
• New York City mailed bills in January to 3,700 people. By Friday, 2,010 had paid $680,000 of $1.2 million owed. That's a small amount in a city that collects $18 billion in taxes every year.
"But this is not so much about the money as it is about our local retailers, who are put at a competitive disadvantage" if they have to collect the taxes and Internet vendors don't, Finance Commissioner Martha Stark says.
In addition to a $1.50 state tax per pack, the city adds another $1.50, making cigarettes in New York City the nation's most expensive.
Sheila Hansen of Manhattan says she got a letter from the city demanding $900 in unpaid taxes on 50 cartons of Kool Milds she bought over three years. Hansen says the city reduced her bill to $750 after she pointed out record-keeping errors. But last week, she got another bill — a $525 claim from New York state.
"I was totally shocked," she says. Hansen says she stopped buying cigarettes online and quit smoking before she got the first bill.
"My biggest beef is, unless they go after every single person that buys anything on the Internet and doesn't pay taxes, it's not fair," she says. "Right now, they're only targeting smokers."

I went to restock and imagine my surprise when the man told me he no longer carried cigars...wtf?

Obama imposed a 31% tax and now NYS, another blue state hellhole, increased the licensing fee from $100/year to between 900 to 2,700.

""Id have to sell $5/cigars for between 8 to 9, so instead, I'm closing for now"

Thank you Democrats for killing yet another small business

Also, you tobacco Nazis should get cryptosporidium in your tofu.

No one stops selling something because of a tax they have to collect. Your guy isn't selling cigars because he doesn't want to spend the money to buy them..... which has NOTHING to do with what you're taxed.

And you can complain all you want, but something had to pay for SCHIP to get kids health coverage.

See what happens when you folk don't want to control insurance companies. :eusa_whistle:

Are you retarded?

It's economics 101, it's Bizzarolond Walmart. He can't sell enough volume at the higher prices to breakeven

This is why real world experience is a vital prerequisite to people who want to be legislators.

Exactly If he cannot sell the cigars relatively fast , they get old, then he loses.

Massage those numbers :)

You buy 2000 cigars at a time? that is one heck of an oral fixation.

Dumb, have you ever tried to quit smoking? It took me forever and it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do and don't tell me that people don't get addicted to cigars because I know plenty that are. Dumb is spending money on something that burns into smoke and is inhaled into your lungs.

That was your choice to smoke or not to smoke. I am glad you chose to quit, no one forced you to smoke did they? Are you willing to apply the same principle to booze?

Yes it was my choice, my point is that nothing bad will come from his cigar shop closing. If he is a true entrepreneur he will find his way through another means and yes I think booze is the root of all evil and one of the most dangerous drugs in our society. Its completely stupid for alcohol to be legal while throwing people in jail for smoking marijuana.

They know best.

Just like Huckabee who did pretty much the same thing in Arkansas before he left the governor's mansion. And Beebe did it again when he took over. So, it doesn't seem to matter which party is in power. They both have the tobacco industry in their sights.

I believe about 10% of politicians from both parties actually give a crap about the common people and their health. These taxes are an easy way to generate more revenue and look politically correct.
