Shamefully, only 2 Democrats voted for the compromise spending bill that Speaker Johnson submitted yesterday. 172 Republicans voted for it, with 38 voting against. Thus, if just 33 Democrats had voted for it, it would have passed and there'd be no worry about a government shutdown during Christmas.
The compromise bill contained about 80-85% of the provisions of the original bill, which is why 38 hardline Republicans voted against it. Speaker Johnson needed help from the Democrats to pass the bill, but only 2 Democrats voted for it.
Democrats are hoping they can extort Johnson into caving in and submitting the original bill, which would most likely pass because at least 50 Republicans would vote for it just to avoid a shutdown. But why can't the Democrats compromise and accept 80-85% of what they originally said they wanted?
