Democrats name their price on ending government shutdown

7 Nov 2025 ~~ By Stephen Neukam & Stef W. Kight

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Friday that Democrats would vote to end the government shutdown in exchange for a one-year extension of expiring ACA tax credits, multiple sources told Axios.

Commentary:
So basically, the compromise is the socialists get what they want, the republicans get bupkis. They want one year because they think they win congress back in a year where they can then ram it through and control a second shutdown.
It's a distinction without a difference. This is STILL trying to put the camel’s nose into the tent, and with the resulting dislocations later on. The place for these spending measures is in a full and real appropriations bill, not a continuing resolution.
Kicking the can down the road only further damages the can. Besides, we are running out of road.
Senator John Kennedy has the right idea.
The Senate should not be paid their monthly salaries until they vote .
If Democrats are willing to stop the government allow the military, air controller and SNAP recipients to go without, then they should also go without the salaries until they sit down and negotiate and leave hostage taking to terrorists.

How is that "bupkis"?

Dems set the date for the subsidies to expire with no republican votes, and now, like most dems, they don't want to be held responsible for their own decisions. They're trying to place the responsibility on republicans, and have their propaganda machine in high gear.

In other words, if the GOP doesn't cave to Schumer's demands, the Dems think they can shift the blame for the continued shutdown on to the GOP.

Wanna take any bets on how many Republicans give in? :laughing0301:

Thune already said 'no'.

They've been trying to blame republicans since day one for the Schumer shutdown. Johnson keeps saying the house bill was bipartisan, but you never seem to hear that on the news. Also the last thing I'd bet on is politics.

You can bet that Schumer is thinking "Now how can we make this look like the Republican's fault?"

It's all political maneuvering to them.

Nope, it's all about POWER to them. They think they can leverage the Schumer shutdown into additional seats in the midterms. Of course the dem owned media will do their best to make sure that dream comes true.

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5595545-schumer-plan-government-shutdown/On top of the one-year extension,

Schumer’s offer also called for short-term funding bill known as a continuing resolution (CR) and the attachment of a three-bill minibus of full-year spending bills that were a part of previous bipartisan talks.

No, not bupkis but a CR and a working and funded government for a year.

What Republicans seem to want is the Democrats to simply give them what they want in exchange for counting on their goodwill for negotiating on extending ACA tax credits but you know... without any negotiating power. Because everybody knows the GOP under Trump doesn't strongarm.

Now I say, do it. Let's see what happens and when 20 million people lose their coverage and don't get health insurance anymore let the GOP own it. In fact, that would be my condition. End the shutdown in exchange for the GOP taking full responsibility for what happens to ACA.

Fine, but the syopper is the inclision of Illegal alien benefits. That won't fly. You know it and we all know it.
As long as Schumer continues this hostage of government all he is doing is hurting the tax payers and constituents of America. He fools no one, if he thinks that he's sticking it to Trump. In truth he's sticking it to the PEOPLE.

The claim about ā€œillegal alien benefitsā€ is a distraction, plain and simple. It’s the GOP’s attempt to reframe the debate around immigration instead of owning up to what’s actually happening: a calculated effort to gut the ACA, a program that benefits millions of Americans.

Shutdowns hurt. That’s not in dispute. But let’s be clear: the GOP could end this tomorrow by agreeing to fund the ACA for one year. They won’t. Why not?

Because the real hostage here isn’t the government, it’s the American people. The GOP passed a bill that slashes programs that serve working families, including the ACA, while preserving tax breaks for the wealthy. And now they’re shocked that Democrats are trying to stop it?

You say Schumer is ā€œsticking it to the people.ā€ But the only reason this fight exists is because the GOP stuck it to the people and Democrats are trying to blunt the damage. That’s what a responsible opposition does.

Is it politically risky? Absolutely. But maybe that’s the cost of clarity. Maybe losing health coverage will finally reveal what voting for Trump actually means. Because slogans don’t pay medical bills, and scapegoating immigrants won’t hide the fact that this shutdown is a consequence of the GOP’s own choices.

.
It's almost as though the Republicans don't want anything passed and want lower income earners punished.

Almost.
