Their gambit involves "someone" in the EC declaring that Trump is an insurrectionist, and thus ineligible to be voted on by the EC.

It's wrong, but that's their attempted logic.

The EC already voted. (back in mid december) their votes can't change at this point.
The only change is whether or not the congress accepts or rejects their vote.
And it takes both houses to reject any EC votes.

I have it on personal word from insiders that on Monday, democrats intend a hail mary to try to block Trump's certification by refusing to certify him.
They will supposedly attempt a novel interpretation of the law that was written back at the time of the Civil War intending to keep Confederates who had risen up against the USA proper (the North) from ever holding federal office.

Further, by interpreting the words within it which lay undefined to fit their agenda.

Finally, under an action of authority ill-defined in the Constitution under which they would try to assume authority to do so anyway.
In short, they will try to block voting to certify Trump under the electoral college votes on the basis that he tried to surmount insurrection against the USA and is so disqualified despite his not only not being involved, but that the only actual key evidence is Trump's two cellular calls where he actually urged people to go peacefully and lawfully.

One thing that is certain is that with democrats, laws and facts are fluid and mean nothing to them but what they want them to mean.

They will supposedly try to block Trump's certification on this basis and I suppose intend then to claim that the only lawful choice left is to install Kammy.
If they try to do this, it would both amount to an attempted coup as well as declaration of trying to do everything they have accused Trump of and condemned and prosecuted him for these past four years, which is why I take the story seriously. Another reason why I take the story serious is that democrats have been very quiet on the matter; there is no question that they want to do this and have looked deeply into its possibilities. I guess now only time will tell just how far democrats intend to try to steal/hold onto power however lawlessly, and just how prepared the GOP will be to deal with it.
