The speakers, schedule and how to watch the Democratic National Convention

The 2024 Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago on Monday. Here’s what to know.

DNC WAPO Convention pict.jpg

Reporting that this week, "tens of thousands of people are expected to travel to Chicago for the 2024 Democratic National Convention" -- that's a lot of people. I wonder what tv and media viewership will pull in: cable, network news, local news, newspapers, radio, websites..?

It just might be the Event of the Year. Event of the Decade. Event of the Century!

The DNC will have "5,000 delegates and alternates" gathering to approve a party platform. They will also be the highlight - Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz formerly accepting the Democratic party’s nominations.

civics 101 lesson: People here @ usmb (and elsewhere), have been parroting partisan attacks bout primary voters etc. Well fyi: It was always going to be party delegates nominating. They spoke. It's now a formality, the acceptance.

When is it?

The main programming for the convention is taking place from Monday, Aug. 19, through Thursday, Aug. 22.

Who are the speakers?

Return to menu
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson will welcome Democrats on Monday, while Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker will speak on Tuesday.

Biden is scheduled to deliver Monday night’s keynote address. First lady Jill Biden is also scheduled to speak that night, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff is slated to speak at the convention Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, Democrats will hold what they’re calling a “roll call celebration” for Harris and Walz to mark their nominations. The move will be ceremonial because the official roll call was held virtually earlier this month to ensure that they would appear on all state ballots. On Tuesday, members of all 57 delegations will deliver remarks and cast ceremonial votes for Harris and Walz as the party’s presidential and vice-presidential nominees.

Other confirmed convention speakers include former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton; former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton; Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer; House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries; and former first lady Michelle Obama.

How do I watch?

The official live stream of the convention will be at DemConvention.com, as well as on YouTube, X, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitch and Prime Video.
The Washington Post will have coverage of the convention beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Thursday. Programming will be anchored by Libby Casey, Rhonda Colvin and James Hohmann live from Chicago. You can watch here, on YouTube and on Washington Post Television available on connected TVs.

...

The convention this year will also host hundreds of online influencers, who will probably be posting unofficial convention-related content to their channels throughout the week.

When will Harris speak?

Harris is expected to speak Thursday night to formally accept the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, the day after Walz delivers his vice-presidential acceptance speech Wednesday.

So what? Speaking for just myself I will be watching none of it. FYI I did not watch much of the GOP convention either, a little but not much. Kabuki theatre gets boring.

I would not watch it, if it weren't for Trump making such outrageous claims and his campaign being so doom and gloom. America needs a lift-me-up.

We could all use a little Joyous Celebration this summer.

The Joyous is getting an early start.

Make Chicago 1968 again! I can hardly wait.

Good luck with that, won't happen.

The Democratic National Convention will open in Chicago on Monday, with President Biden speaking in prime time as he passes the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Driving the news: Convention organizers released night-by-night themes and speaker details on Sunday morning. One speaker who's not on the official agenda but Axios has confirmed will take the stage on Tuesday: former First Lady Michelle Obama.
  • Monday, "For the People": Biden and Dr. Jill Biden speak, along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a welcome from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
  • Tuesday, "A Bold Vision for America's Future": Former President Obama plus second gentleman Doug Emhoff, with a welcome from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
  • Wednesday, "A Fight for Our Freedoms": Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz delivers his acceptance speech, preceded by former President Clinton, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (per CNN).
  • Thursday, "For Our Future": Harris accepts the convention's nomination for president.
Other speakers include Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
  • Former President Carter's grandson, Jason Carter, is expected to speak on behalf of his grandfather, who has said he hopes to stay alive long enough to vote for Harris.
Sneak peek: The stairs at the delegate entrance will say "History Is In Your Hands" — a quote from Biden's Oval Office address on July 24.
  • As delegates arrive on Monday ahead of Biden's speech, digital signage in the United Center will say: "History is in your hands" and "Spread the faith."
DNC lineup: Who's speaking and what to expect

It's already mayhem. Wow. :(

Spread the faith! The FAITH? Is democrat a religious sect? Or are they relying on Islam?

I hope for the sake of America that it's at least just as chaotic AND violent as the 1968 convention.

And I see the dogs-of-war have been released by the special interests that are threatened by the pro-blue collar worker, pro-working family, pro-union worker, pro-good pay and benefits support of Democrats and the Harris/Walz team.

ex: GMCGeneral (disrespectful upside-down flag dipshit): "Unions hate management, just that simple. And whatever they can extort out of the company is a good thing? Unions exist to put companies out of business, period! They have always been totally unwilling to help make companies profitable. This is why I support busting them to total irrelevance."

Wowza! It's gonna be an alternate reality week with these people. But We're prepared.

Trump and Vance ‘waged war on workers’

Speaking to thousands of union members in a darkened auditorium, Walz said he and Harris will support workers by bringing collective bargaining and other protections to “every state in the union”. The 1.4-million-member union has endorsed Harris.

“We know exactly who built this country,” Walz said. “People in this room built the middle class.”

‘We know that when unions are strong, America is strong’

They hate this. They fear this. They have been set into panic mode over this:

AND I THINK WHAT KAMAL HARRIS KNOWS IS BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER AROUND THE SHARED VALUES, STRONG PUBLIC SCHOOLS, STRONG LABOR UNIONS THAT CREATE THE MIDDLE CLASS, HEALTH CARE THAT'S AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE, THOSE ARE THE THINGS.

YOU LOOK WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THEY WENT RIGHT TO DIVISION. THEY DID NOT GIVE US A PLAN ON HEALTH CARE.

DONALD TRUMP TALKED ABOUT INFRASTRUCTURE. JOE BIDEN AND KAMALA HARRIS BUILT BRIDGES, BUILT ROADS. SO I THINK THIS IS GOING BACK TO THE BREAD AND BUTTER, GETTING AWAY FROM THIS DIVISION.

WE DO NOT LIKE WHAT HAS HAPPENED WHERE WE CAN'T EVEN GO TO THANKSGIVING DINNER WITH OUR UNCLE BECAUSE YOU END UP IN SOME WEIRD FIGHT THAT IS UNNECESSARY. AND I THINK BRINGING BACK PEOPLE TOGETHER -(INSERT LAUGH HERE)- WELL IT'S TRUE.

THESE GUYS ARE JUST WEIRD. THEY ARE RUNNING FOR HE-MAN WOMEN HATERS CLUB OR SOMETHING. THAT'S NOT WHAT PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN.

Wishing ill on Americans and a great city.

Typical of pathetic, little, worms who support cheating, stealing, and robbing hard working Americans in pursuit of higher and higher profits at the expense of worker's livelihoods and lives.
Chicago IlliNOIZE has never been great. It's the birthplace of Al Capone gangsterism which still plagues all urban shitbholes run exclusively by Democrats for decades and centuries. Sorry, but yes, I do wish ill will on America's Enemies who are now congregating on that piece of shit city.
