Not perhaps and nothing odd. Reagan couldn't muster a coalition or support for the defense of or for the Christians or pro west and neutral Sunni's so he cut and ran. Lebanon came under the control of Iran via Hezbollah and Sryria. Armed and well equiped troops of the Revolutionary Gaurd and Hezbbollah exterminated or chased the Christians out and put any other factions opposed to dictorial rule in graves or into submission. It still goes on to this day. We are still dealing with the same terrorist organizations that should have been annihilated in the 80's.
As Lebanon was being lost, responsibilty for acts of terrorism against the USA shifted to a guy named Muammar Qaddafi who was the dictator of Libya and desired to be viewed as the leader of the Arab world. He ended up giving Reagan and the USA a special Christmas present in 1988 as a response to a weak and lame response by Reagan for Qaddafi's murder of Americian troops in Germany.

Alright, but that still avoids two issues.

First, why there were no more hostages taken, after all, the kidnap of Buckley happened long after the Marines left Lebanon.

Secondly; exactly what you would have suggested as a better alternative?

Also, the response to the German Disco bombing was swift and deadly. I do believe Kadaffi lost family members, and damned near his own life as a result of that attack.

Not sure I understand your first issue. The Marines pulled out of Lebanon on Feb. 24, 1984. Buckley was kidnapped three weeks later on March 16. The purpose of the kidnappings were to prevent American and French retaliation for the barracks attacks. Reagan had vowed on the night of the attacks that the Marines and the USA would stay in Lebanon. I remember the speech. America was pissed. After going through the Iranian hostage crap nobody was in the mood to be fucked over by terrorist. Big part of the reason Reagan was the elected President was because we thought he was the kind that would not let us get pushed around. We were wrong.
In any case, here are some of the names of American citizens who were kidnapped and held hostages. It's a long list so this is just a partial list and doesn't include the other westerners. In the end it came out to be about 2 dozen Americans for a total of about a hundred total hostages.
Frank Reiger, Jeremy Levin, Rev. Wier, Father Jenco, Peter Kilburn, Robert Pohill, Charles Glass are some of the hostages in addition to the ones I have mentioned in previous post.
