Television is a dismal cerebral failure in the United states and Newton Minnow’s observation that it was already a vast wasteland in 1961 went largely unnoticed, unheeded and unattended to. But occasionally a redeeming quality emerges on the screen even if it is sequestered high up in the branches of new technology away from the beck and call of many.

Netflix is a service offered by cable television providers and some new smart televisions come equipped with a Netflix app built right in. Much of the content is commercial free delivering movies and documentaries that would never see the light of day on the standard boob tube.

Viewers got a gem recently in a presentation highlighting the Israeli show trials of John Demjanjuk, a Ukrainian immigrant living in Cleveland Ohio allegedly reported to be notorious prison guard Ivan Marchenko (Ivan the Terrible) a sadistic Nazi SS operative who maimed women and children with a sword before they were forced into the gas chambers.

Marchenko, no doubt, was real person and his atrocities were burned into the memories of Jewish witnesses. But the evidence did not support the accusations that Demjanjuk was Marchenko even though it was highly likely that he was indeed a prison guard in the death camps. Incensed Jews threw acid in the face of Demjanjuk’s Jewish defense attorney but eventually the accused was found not guilty by the Israeli Supreme Court of being Ivan the terrible.

But the Ford Motor Plant retiree was harassed for decades, deported twice and eventually flown to Germany where he was tried for being an accessory to Nazi prison camp carnage. He died in a German nursing home in 2012 and he was presumed innocent by German law due to his death without a resolution of the charges.

The big question: Why was Werner Von Braun, the rocket genius that ushered the US to the Moon not clapped in handcuffs and dragged to Israel to be judged for his part in the Holocaust? Is the enemy of our enemy such a great friend that the killing of innocent women and children is just the cost of doing business?

While Demjanjuk put bolts in Fords, Von Braun rubbed elbows with John Kennedy. Was Von Braun one of the “good” Nazis? Turn off the Masked Singer and Dancing with the Stars and watch the Netflix documentary. Then think about it.
