The glory-days of American Unions evaporated with America's entry into World War II - never to return.

Stereotypically speaking, unions are perceived as corrupt money-making clubs oftentimes in-bed with organized crime.

Many only rarely "go-to-bat" for their members in disciplinary actions other than perfunctory pro forma appearances.

Many usually "cave" to management pressure nowadays and achieve far less for their members than they promise.

Many members are only members because they cannot get jobs or get-into or remain in a Trade unless they hold a card.

Many members... vast legions of them... no longer feel bound to subscribe to their leadership's declared political candidates.

Those times appear to be behind us now, to a large degree... the next election or two will tell us more about that.
