Offhand, Mike, I'd guess that maybe ten years ago, Dearborn had practically no muslims in it. I mean, it isn't even warm there. So, I'd also wager that this didn't just happen by accident or with the public's knowledge nor blessings. A city doesn't just suddenly turn 55% hostile, aggressive foreign immigrant entity without someone in the background pressing the buttons.

Not to argue the point, but you would be wrong about the ten years. Middle Eastern groups have settled in a few areas in the US, Dearborn was likely one. Jacksonville Florida had a significant Arab population in the 1950s. My best friend's mother was from a Syrian family that immigrated to the US from Syria mostly after WW II. They were Christians.

It was quite a big scandal here when Somali's from Minneapolis were taking their girls to Islamic doctors in Dearborn for female genital mutilation because the practice was banned by law in Minnesota.

A bone headed Michigan supreme court ruled that the practice could continue since there was no law against it.


The legislature promptly passed a law, now it is illegal.
