David Parker has just died

RIP.

I remember him from the 1979 World Series, when he was with the Pirates. That was a great series. The Pirates were down 3 games to 1, but came back to win against the Orioles.

There is no link cuz Mrs Parker asked that the announcement be made at the Reds game at 3:00
Former Redleg
Born in Cincinnati

I'm a Pirates fan, and he was a great player. Until greatness and a World Championship went to his head and he started on drugs and gained weight. Some people can't handle prosperity. Could have been a sure Hall of Famer.

As a Pirates fan, that's the last blaze of glory I can hang my hat on. Fortunately, the Pirates won at the ages when it mattered to me the most.

This is sad. Parker was one of my favorite baseball players. He had a gun for an arm and he had power as a hitter.

One of the really good guys....Always played hard, never tanked it, and an asset in the locker room.

They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Yes they do.

He did make it this year, The Classic Baseball Era Committee picked him along with Dick Allen.

I was never a Pirates fan, but that ‘79 WS was fun to watch. Wasn’t the Pirates theme song We Are Family?

I did like the 79 Pirates. My team is the Royals.

I was reading about that a week ago.

They made it their theme song (Willie Stargel).

Great time. I was not a fan.....but you have to appreciate team comradery and heart.

Yes sir, they built a great team back then

Then, they ruined the organization, when they let Mr. Oversized Cranium sign with them

I knew at that point, the organization was over

Parker was never as popular in Pittsburgh as maybe he should have been. "We" were still infatuated with the memory of Clemente, and although Parker could have been said to be better - all things considered - we never "loved" him the way we did Roberto, and he seemed to resent that. Further, he put on a lot of weight in his last few years with the team and it was interpreted as, he just didn't give a shit. No tears were shed when he went to the hated Reds.

Looking back, he could have done a lot of things to endear himself to the fans, but chose not to, and we didn't give him the props that he deserved. In later years he was very well received here in the Burgh, and I think he appreciated that.

Certainly he belongs in Cooperstown.
