I don't think that is good. The census needs to be accurate in terms of populations and such, not just for political purposes. The census is used for a great many things. It really should not be politicized.

There are other tools that are used to determine citizenship/noncitizen numbers.

I'm ok with this as long as the census taker checks to make sure if they're citizens or not.

How would they be able to do that? Census takers are just ordinary people - they aren't the immigration service. That is not their job.

If it can't be verified, the illegal count will always come up short. The widely-used number back through 2000-2016 was "11 million illegals". But many people thought that number was short, believing there were actually something like 20 million. We'll probably never know.

Up until 2000 there was a long form that a select percentage of people received. Citizenship status was included, see question 13 of:

I do recall the cussing about the government minding its own business when my dad received the long form in 1970. One question was whether he entered his residence from an indoor hallway or from the outside? My dad wanted to answer back, drunk or sober? Pretty sure the form ended up in the trash.
