What is Dark Money?

What is Dark Money?
Dark Money refers to political spending meant to influence the decision of a voter, where the donor is not disclosed and the source of the money is unknown. Depending upon the circumstances, Dark Money can refer to funds spent by a political nonprofit or a super PAC. Here’s how:

  • Political nonprofits are under no legal obligation to disclose their donors. When they choose not to, they are considered Dark Money groups.
  • Super PACs can also be considered Dark Money groups in certain situations. While these organizations are legally required to disclose their donors, they can accept unlimited contributions from political non-profits and “shell” corporations who may not have disclosed their donors, in these cases they are considered Dark Money groups.

Dark Money..............Political Non-profit.......lol..........groups buy and sell politicians............pay to play such as the Clinton Foundation and Karl Rove organizations.

They pour massive amounts of money into political campaigns and they don't do it without expecting something in return. THEY FUND THE SWAMP.............

This is the biggest flaw in the political system in the US. Super Pacs were made possible by the citizens united ruling in a 5-4 vote, with the conservative justices being the majority. Citizens United v. FEC - Wikipedia
Every politician in the US needs one to get elected and that creates a system of political clientelism.

Hillary's New Super Pac money machine.

Oh God: Clinton To Launch New Super PAC To Help 2018 Candidates, Organizations Opposed To Trump

Hillary Clinton is out of the bunker and now part of the resistance. This was inevitable. Clinton lost the 2016 election, she just cannot move on from it, and now will continue to try and influence Democratic politics even though many just want her to go away. Regardless, now that she’s out of the woods, Clinton will be eliciting the help of her former chief development officer at the Clinton Foundation to find donors for her new super PAC that will start out helping organizations fighting the Trump agenda. Eventually it will put to work to assist candidates for the 2018 midterms. The PAC will be called Onward Together (via Politico):

Inside spending: super PACs, dark money groups dominated by political insiders

The revolving door to outside spending groups

Now, some of those very intermediaries have moved from parties to "outside spending groups." Of the 49 super PACs that spent more than $1 million, 34 of them had connections to former party, campaign, congressional and executive branch insiders. They served as board members, executive directors, political directors, fundraisers and other strategic roles. Similarly, 11 of the 16 biggest spending dark money groups–those that do not disclose their donors–had former party insiders in their ranks, according to a Sunlight analysis of FEC disclosure reports, paperwork filed with the Internal Revenue Service, media accounts and our own reporting. For the analysis, we included only groups formed after McCain Feingold was passed in 2002; longstanding political players like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO were excluded.

Our analysis may understate the size of the revolving door: Super PACs do not need to disclose the names of officials who make political decisions for the organizations–the name of a treasurer is all that is required. In many cases, Sunlight was unable to determine who exercised control over a super PAC or of newly formed nonprofit organizations that have yet to disclose their officers to the Internal Revenue Service. We excluded from our analysis treasurers who, though they may have worked for multiple campaigns and parties, were primarily compliance officers–essentially, individuals who filed paperwork with the FEC. We focused on political operatives who moved seamlessly from the world of campaigns and parties to super PACs.

Again the default position of some is to blame Citizens United, when this kind of corruption existed well before it was enacted. I suspect this indicates the poster is brainwashed by the radical left.

Read my post. I specified super PACS not dark money. The point was, it's a system that's made more severe thanks to conservative justices, making all the posts about Hilary seriously hypocritical. Where I live (Belgium), parties draw their funding from subsidies and campaigns are limited in both scope, funds and duration. Although there are still ways for big companies to influence politicians, companies can't exert nearly as much influence on the political system.

Super Pacs use Dark Money here................Have been for decades and then don't have to disclose donors..........then have the nerve to call some of them Non profit orgs............there are rules...........they violate them all the time.

I've been saying it for YEARS, term limits & publicly funded campaigns. Serving in DC was never intended to be a career. Congressional salaries also need to be reduced & end the year round legislating. We don't need new laws passed every week.

Just to put it in perspective. In the 90's the secretary general of NATO was Belgian, he resigned and was charged here because his party took money from a company, to get a contract for the purchase of military helicopters. In the US that would be legal. Here his political career was over and he almost went to jail.Willy Claes - Wikipedia

Nope, American's can't even agree to make healthcare a public responsibility. Can you imagine any politician suggesting political campaigns funded by tax dollars? That politician wouldn't need to bother running again, he would probably be drawn and quartered.
