When the war broke out in South Sudan, the Darfuri rebel movements took different stand in support of South Sudan President, Salva Kiir rather than their historical allies represented by the rebel leader, Dr Riek Machar and Garang sons as nicknamed.

The latter draws Pagan Amum and Taban Deng, the godfather of rebellion and the former governor of the Unity State.

At that time, Deng was in charge of training and arming anti Sudan groups including Sudan Liberation Movement-North , the Darfuri rebel groups, Divisions 9 and 10, and lately the umbrella rebel groups known as Sudan Revolutionary Front.

Under the Ugandan pressure, these groups especially Justice and Equality Movement led by Jibreel Ibrahim and Sudan Liberation Movement led by Arko Mini Menawe have sided with Juba in the fighting.

The involvement of the Darfuri rebel movements in the fighting in South was affirmed by international bodies. UN Mission in South Sudan has issued statement accusing the government of South Sudan of employing Darfuri mercenaries from the rebel Justice and Equality Movement.

A report released on 8 May by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on the human rights situation revealed that Sudanese rebels, namely Darfur’s Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), were providing military support to government troops fighting rebellion in the country, which erupted in mid-December last year following a split in the ruling SPLM party.

The Sudanese rebel groups were accused of looting, mass killing, raping about 20 women and attacking health centres.

History has repeated itself. The Darfuri rebels are used to intervening or being employed as mercenaries in Libya during Ghaddafi regime and other countries where they have committed heinous crimes.

The international reports have supported Khartoum’s claims that Sudanese rebels have participated in the conflict in the newborn state.

In addition to Sudanese rebels, Uganda’s backed M23 movement is also involved in the fighting.

Khartoum has accused Juba of harboring and using Sudanese armed groups in its conflict.

The Sudanese said Juba’s actions contradict the security agreements signed between the two countries, as well as a cessation of hostilities agreement signed between the warring parties on 23 January, in which both sides resolved not to resort to using foreign troops.

“Juba’s actions contradict with its commitments as a member of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which designated JEM and [the] Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) as negative forces that threatens [the] security of the region and obliged member countries not to deal with them,” Khartoum said in a statement.

It further said that the involvement of armed groups in the southern conflict led to the targeting of Sudanese civilians in Bantiu where 200 Sudanese nationals were killed.

It’s time for the international community to remind President of the threats of involving foreign mercenary in the conflict and the growing danger of humanitarian situations.
