MINNEAPOLIS — The city of Minneapolis spent $330,000 to clear 17 homeless encampments during the last half of 2024, according to a new report released Tuesday. Data comes from a recently passed ordinance requiring the city to track costs associated with encampment closures.
The report shows 227 unsheltered residents were displaced during these operations. About $270,000 went towards police expenses.

The city has cited public health concerns as a reason for clearing encampments. According to the Minneapolis Police Department, encampment-related violence resulted in 15 fatal shootings and 387 overdose calls within one block of encampments. The report also noted a 76% decrease in 911 calls in affected areas following encampment closures.


The city offered shelter or housing options to 169 individuals before the closures, but only nine people accepted.
