Zhikharev said Chavez had offered "a whole island with an airdrome, which we can use as a temporary base for strategic bombers," the agency reported. "If there is a corresponding political decision, then the use of the island ... by the Russian Air Force is possible."

Interfax reported he said earlier that Cuba has air bases with four or five runways long enough for the huge bombers and could be used to host the long-range planes.

I don't get it. Why is this big news again?

If Russia wanted to attack the United States, it wouldn't exactly announce it. Who cares if Cuba or Vennezuela have Russian bombers? As long as they don't come over Florida and bomb.... errr, well scratch that. As long as they don't come over Georgia and bomb the hell out of Georgia, I don't really care where Russia has its bombers.

Turkey, Japan, Kyrgyzstan are all that I could find that are somewhat close to Russia. Not to mention we formed an alliance with Western Europe to formally oppose Russia. Something called NATO. In addition, we also have GROUND forces in several countries surrounding Russia. Georgia is one of them. How would we react if Russia landed ground troops in Cuba? It's amazing how the American media reacts to anything Russia does. OH NO! Cuba's going to host Russian bombers! Oh no!

oh he offered them that deal. Russia, of course, refused. The right way to go about it was to say "We are going to disarm Iran and we expect you to help us." then they could have said "Only if you drop the Missile shield". But Obama wasn't experienced enough to know that strategy. Go figure.
