Cruz to Republicans: Limit voting at all costs

Ted Cruz sees this as an existential threat to the Republican party..is it? I think that it's a shot at the right wing, for sure. Party moderates probably not as concerned--but tossing out phrases like, "they want child molesters and illegal aliens" to vote--shows the far right's concern over this bill--as no one has seriously suggested either. There is a provision for ex-cons to regain their franchise..so?

On an invitation-only call last week, Sen. Ted Cruz huddled with Republican state lawmakers to call them to battle on the issue of voting rights.
Democrats are trying to expand voting rights to “illegal aliens” and “child molesters,” he claimed, and Republicans must do all they can to stop them. If they push through far-reaching election legislation now before the Senate, the GOP won’t win elections again for generations, he said.
Asked if there was room to compromise, Cruz was blunt: “No.”
“H.R. 1′s only objective is to ensure that Democrats can never again lose another election, that they will win and maintain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate and of the state legislatures for the next century,” Cruz said told the group organized by the American Legislative Exchange Council, a corporate-backed, conservative group that provides model legislation to state legislators.
Cruz’s statements, recorded by a person on the call and obtained by The Associated Press, capture the building intensity behind Republicans’ nationwide campaign to restrict access to the ballot. From statehouses to Washington, the fight over who can vote and how — often cast as “voting integrity” — has galvanized a Republican Party in search of unifying mission in the post-Trump era. For a powerful network of conservatives, voting restrictions are now viewed as a political life-or-death debate, and the fight has all-but eclipsed traditional Republican issues like abortion, gun rights and tax cuts as an organizing tool.
That potency is drawing influential figures and money from across the right, ensuring that the clash over the legislation in Washington will be partisan and expensive.
So you're in favor of child molesters and illegals voting?????
Look dumbshit....there is NO provision for illegals voting...no matter how you ignorant POS's try to spin it. Yeah..i imagine there might be some sex offenders among the excons who regain their franchise, so? Are you so stupid...don't answer that!---to believe that the few who vote will effect any legislation at all?
Instead of the usual knee-jerk bs...how about addressing the issue honestly, pro or con?

Many felons will vote which is why the Democrats want to give them back their right. Of course, does it really matter? They could vote using someone else's name anyway since no voter id is required either. Democrats are either REALLY stupid/ignorant or ok with corrupting our voting system.
So let’s get this straight...
A convicted felon will risk returning to prison just so he can vote under someone else’s name.

Makes sense to the Conservative mind

A criminal will risk going to prison for any of his crimes. Does it make sense for a 19 year old criminal to go in with a gun into a convenience store and shoot up the place for $50 and risk the Freaking electric chair for that little bit of scratch?

Criminals aren't logical people for the most part, I don't think their minds are fully developed.

And these are the people who want to vote in election and determine who will rule America?

Just too stupid for words.

Why don't the libs remove convicted paedophiles and pederasts from the bill then?

Each state has its own rules on whether felons who have done their time are allowed to vote

He'd be stupid if he didn't care. The D's are against the Electric Chair and 3 Strikes Laws. Any criminal worth their salt has an interest in revolving door prisons and serving easy time, instead of being put out on a chain gang.

Thank you.

Here in Pennsylvania, election officials are FORBIDDEN to challenge the signatures on the ballots and envelopes to ascertain their accuracy. If I were to move, and an Illegal Family moved here, they could send in my ballot, sign my name, and no one would be the wiser. And even if they were, they couldn't challenge the ballot.

I guess if you guys want to empower NAMBLA and make their endorsement worth something, that's the key.

Why are you only concerned with child molesters who have been convicted?

There are thousands of child molesters out there who have been voting in every election for years. The fact that they haven't been caught and convicted really shouldn't matter. They are child molesters.

Then there are the ones who were caught, prosecuted, sent to prison and paid their debt to society who have already been released and are voting now. Most states reinstate voting rights after a criminal pays their debt to society.

There are thousands of them out there who are voting. They voted in the last election.

So why are you so upset now? Thousands of them are already voting, have been voting and you didn't have a problem with it.

You don't give a flying fig about child molesters voting. It's just more of that fake far right outrage that most people are so very tired of. And a very flimsy excuse to prevent people from voting.

We should go back to the way it was during the days of the Founding Fathers. A system where only the smartest are allowed to vote is the way to go. America was a better country back then.

Fine. If the people of your state think that convicted Chomos should be deciding public policy, fine. But this is pushing it on ALL the states, including those who don't think its appropriate for politicians to go out and earn the Paedophile vote.

Voting has never been an absolute nor inalienable right. ...

Bullshit. One [hu]man[being] one vote!

What's going wrong is it that children (including still unborn children) have no vote. Sure this votes have first to be managed from the parents in the best interest of their children and have step by step to be expanded until they are able to vote fully when they'll reach full age.

Why are Republicans so desperate to limit voting rights? Voting fraud has been thoroughly proven to be nearly nonexistent; therefore, one can only assume they don't want certain groups of voters voting for Democrats. I predict that this will not end well for Republicans. We must not allow a resurgence of Jim Crow voter suppression. What do you think?

The face you make and the desperation you resort to when you know, 1) Your party has nothing in the way of new policy initiatives, 2) You can see the writing on the wall that most of the country is fed up with Point #1 and is about to kick your party to the curb. So rather than address policy issues and renounce failed stand by's like supply side and trickle down economic policies (tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy), you retreat to old tactics of cultural wedge issues, voter suppression, gerrymandering, and division pimping.
What are the "new" Democrat initiatives?
Welfare and Stimulus Checks.

Largely wouldn't have been necessary if there were a competent team in the WH in January, 2020 who crafted an adult response to the virus...or gave a shit in particular.
But, like 2008, a Democrat has to come in to bail out a Republican.
Next diversion?

Why are Republicans so desperate to limit voting rights?

Why are Democrats so desperate to limit voter ID?

So, you think voter ID is the problem? If so - what is your solution?

So, you think voter ID is the problem?

I think it is part of the problem.

If so - what is your solution?

Requiring it.

Why wasn't voter ID a problem in the 2020 election?

Because states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and others passed legislative laws in violation of their State Constitutions regarding voting in direct violations of their laws.

America was never a direct democracy, thank God, but a constitutional Republic. Voting is NOT an absolute right.

Largely wouldn't have been necessary if there were a competent team in the WH in January, 2020 who crafted an adult response to the virus...or gave a shit in particular.
But, like 2008, a Democrat has to come in to bail out a Republican.
Next diversion?
Name me the nation's leader who responded appropriately to COVID or continue making a fool of yourself.
HINT: None.

So....you don't want to be allowed to vote.

If I don’t meet the qualifications, then I shouldn’t be allowed to vote. I like my chances of qualifying far more than most Democrat voters.
So you believe in a "literacy test" which btw is illegal. If you were educated, you'd know that.
After 60 years of welfare and taxes supposedly paying for poorer children to be able to attend public schools It should be required that the voter know the platform of the person they are voting that can change my Net Income.
I would prefer these poorer areas become success stories.

The thread title is inaccurate. Here is the correct version:

Ted Cruz takes a stand to protect legal U.S. citizens from being disenfranchised.

As an aside, the original title is a clear violation of the Clean Thread Policy...not that I have any faith in the Board Hegemony to apply that policy to anyone who is not right of center.

America was never a direct democracy, thank God, but a constitutional Republic. Voting is NOT an absolute right.
