Crepitus's 5 rules to fix congress

How many will you agree with?

1. Term Limits. They get to serve two terms just like the president, then make way for new blood. There is no excuse for people staying in those positions for 60 and 70 years. They spend more energy campaigning than working because the job is so lucrative.

Which leads to:

2. Congresscritters should be paid the median salary of the state they represent, and divest themselves of tradeable assets. If they want to make more money they need to take actions that raise the median wage in their state.

Folks will say "we can't do that, they have to maintain two households and travel a lot"

Which leads me to:

3. No more travel at taxpayer expense. It's 2025 give them all an I-pad and a Zoom subscription. There are ways to vote electronically too. One household, no travel. Also no international travel. There is no need to a senator from Idaho to go to Paris on "business". If they want a European vacation they can pay for it themselves.

And eliminating all that time spent on airplanes and free vacations means more time to work. Which gives them time for:

4. Single Issue Bills Only. If you want more money for your pet project you can't add a provision that gives money to save puppies so everyone goes "awe" and votes for it. If a bill can't pass on it's own merits we don't need it.

And finally:

5. A Congresscritter is always considered to be under oath when speaking to the public or in any official capacity. If they are caught lying they can be charged with perjury, put on trial in their state in front of their constituents, and if convicted summarily removed from office.

Any thoughts?
Neither party will impose term limits on themselves.

The only way to get this done is a Convention of the States, the Article V movement.

States need to, for the first time in US history, amend the Constitution.

It was put in the Constitution in case the Federal government became too corrupt and abusive.

Clearly, we are there.

Quibble....

How do you get a body to vote term limits on itself? I mean I think it's desperately needed and probably should be constitutionalized. How do you get there?

i have one too...vote both parties out and put in people that care about the country and not some useless party...
The "people that care"; are they volunteers or 'drafted'?
If you have many "that care" how would you select the 'one' from the many?

How is this really different from what we have.

Top-down solutions aren’t the answer.

There needs to be a fundamental change of political culture at the very local level – and that’s not going to happen with an electorate that’s willfully ignorant, needlessly frightened, and blindly disengaged.
So how would you make the electorate knowledgeable, fearless, and involved(engaged) ?

It's not in their nature to do the "people's business". They do their own and that of their biggest donors. Campaign finance reform is needed.

Our leaders can't seem to go for the head but are always fighting other part of the body of our problems, which is an exercise in futility.
Perhaps more like campaigning reform ?

It costs lots of money to make yard signs, print handouts, do radio and TV adds, have a campaign office and staff and telephones, etc.

BTW, there are limits already on how much individuals and 'businesses' can contribute to a campaign. Mid four figures is the usual max. Both sides have "biggest donors", who's money only "buys" the Congress-criter if they win. Not to mention that often there are "big donors" with opposing desires of what they want from the candidate.

What I'm seeing here are a lot of people who have never been involved with either major party at local level , nor volunteered for any candidates campaign.

I.e. many of you sound like you might also be "willfully ignorant, needlessly frightened, and blindly disengaged."

if i have to tell you then you dont pay attention...

So add it to the list.

6. campaign finance reform. prevent megadonors from buying candidates.
Again with the "campaign finance reform" crap again. Money comes from three sources: lobbyists, taxpayers, or the candidates themselves. Pick your poison. And yes, libs will always say more taxpayer money without shutting off the spigot.

15th post
Hmm, I actually and somewhat agree with the lib. Except for number five. The two terms that are thrown around today ad nauseum are "lie" and "hate." People use them so casually that they're almost meaningless.
