july 4 2025 A stunning study by the fiscal watchdog group Open the Books reports that more than 130 Los Angeles lifeguards made more than $200,000 last year – with one guard hauling in more than half a million dollars in 2024.


Some 34 lifeguards brought $300,000 or more last year, the report stated, with the highest earner getting $523,351 in base pay, “other pay,” and benefits. The dollar amount also encompasses “other” pay, leave time payouts, health insurance payments, pension contributions, deferred contributions, long-term disability and life insurance payouts.

An updated 2024 analysis from the watchdog group found that 134 lifeguards earned at least $200,000 in 2024, including benefits, while 34 of the highest earners received $300,000 in compensation packages, as noted in OpenTheBooks' new report.

According to the Walker, Texas Ranger episode that John Schneider did in 1999, firemen save lives because that is what we see him do as a fireman just before he is shot by a gang member.
