I think you might not have been watching.

But do you think citing facts is obnoxiious? Why do you think the CBS segment is obnoxious? Is it better to see things as they are or pretend they aren't as bad as they are?

the loons were doing the same thing before the last election.... until mccain imploded.

go look at how many threads said how sawwah was going to bring mccain to victory. lol..

mostly, things are cyclical. sometimes you win seats. sometimes you lose seats.

and the reality is the tea idiots are idiots and will screw up and get soundly thrashed next time.

it also isn't that big a deal because dems still hold the veto pen and will still hold the senate.

so the right can hold its breath until it turns blue, but unless they learn how to work with the president and the senate, they're going to be tossed in two years.

or they can be idiots and shut down the government and throw a giant temper tantrum...

and they'll be tossed in two years.

just how it is.

What good does "working with the prez" do when he has made it clear that he has no intention of finding compromise? Compromise in his eyes is the R's bending to his ideas and if they don't, the prez and dems will just label them "obstructionists" instead of actualy finding common ground. ...and yes, it goes the other way as well.

Except that this thread was not intended or set up to be a 'celebration thread' and very few of us have used it for that purpose. This thread was to be a place to discuss the issues and trends and the directions the election was going. Do you see the OP as obnoxious.

I wasn't posting on USMB at the time Obama was elected but was involved on other boards and on all there was much chortling and bashing of George W. Bush and Republicans and conservatives and how we were all going to finally get our comeuppance and how Obama was the Chosen One to save the world from us evil rightwingers.

And maybe you see 'working with the President' as the thing Congress should be doing. I'm absolutely certain you took that point of view when George Bush was in the White House (cough). Right?

I am among those who want bad legislation to fail. I want bad policy to fail. I don't WANT people going along to get along in Washington. I don't want a President who is anti Constitution, anti-business, who thinks we can spend ourselves rich, who is willing to mortgage the future of our children, grand children, and generations beyond to push a soft Marxist socialism that has never worked anywhere.

And if you think those of us who see it that way are 'obnoxious', well, that's just the way the mop flops.

This little story has been circulating on the web for awhile, but I think it is pertinent to think about if you still are deciding how to vote next week:

From a teacher in the Nashville area.

The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year.

The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest.

I decided that we would have an election for a class president.

We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.

To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members.

We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have.

We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.

The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids.

I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support.

I had never seen Olivia's mother.

The day for their speeches arrived.

Jamie went first.

He had several specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best.

Everyone applauded and he sat down.

Now is was Olivia's turn to speak.

Her speech was concise.

She said, "If you vote for me, I will give you ice cream."

She sat down.

The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream."

She surely would say more. She did not have to.

A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure.

Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didn't know.

The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream.

Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.

The moral of this story:

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and 52 percent of the people reacted like the nine year old students.

They wanted ice cream. They didn't care how they got it or who would pay for it or who would be left out. They wanted ice cream.

The other 48 percent weren't all that impressed with their candidate, but they knew if they went with the ice cream campaign they would wind up having to feed the cow that produced the cream and clean up the mess it made and also would have to deliver much more than just cream in order to produce the promised ice cream.

And now. . . .

The people still wait for the ice cream and are being told it is Jamie's fault that they don't have it, but it is still coming and, if Jamie would just agree to help deliver it, all would be well much more quickly.

The campaign is pretty much over now. (Thank God.)

The barbs, jabs, 'offensive comments' , polling numbers (sometimes confused with 'celebating'), commentary, satire, rallies, and rhetoric spun to unbelievable ridiculousness are all but done. (Thank God.)

The mods have issued their obligatory admonition that excessive gloating will not be tolerated from either side.

I support that policy.

And now we wait, perhaps with anticipation, perhaps with some trepidation, for the polls to close and the returns to be announced, dissected, adjusted, projected, and explained ad nauseum by at least all the cable networks tonight.

The Dems I believe expect to lose a lot of seats. They hope to lose less than some have projected. Perhaps some are wanting the GOP to take over so the Dems will stop taking the heat for a bad economy and unpopular legislation.

The GOP I believe expect to gain a lot of seats. Some hope to gain more than have been realistically projected. Some are prepared to gain fewer than have been projected. Some are seeing this election as bittersweet because if the GOP gains enough power to turn things around, it will likely be Barack Obama who takes and gets the credit. If things don't turn around, it will be the GOP who gets the blame.

And of course there is always the chance that the conservatives we intend to elect will not govern according to their campaign rhetoric. Are Republicans more trustworthy to govern as they campaign than Democrats are?

Whatever happens tonight, it will be interesting. And I bet most of us will be watching.
