Considering getting my license to sell health and life insurance.

It's all about you. I've met many men who don't care about their families. The main reason is that they, like you, don't want "New Dad" to get rich off your death. Selfish, selfish and, did I say selfish... Instead, you should think of it as giving your wife a chance to vent a "New Dad" so she doesn't bring in an abusive person to your children. I've seen this over and over with jerk husbands who die and the wife has to marry the first jerk that comes along and is abusive. See, Life Insurance is really paycheck insurance. If you die, your paycheck dies with you. It takes about 8 to 10 years for a family to transition from life with you to life without you financially. If you earn $6,000/mo. That's 60 one hundred dollar bills. Doesn't it make sense to take one of those 60 to protect the other 59 in the event of your death?

I had a friend who sat at the table with the mom and dad he put the close out and dad said " hell if I die just throw me in the ground." He didn't realize his little girl was listening. She walked up to him and said "Daddy would you just throw me in the ground? Daddy wrote the check.
 
This is a very high turnover market with a ton of earning potential. There are agents right now making 500k to millions of dollars annually. I may just be arrogant, but I consider myself somewhat ahead of the curve when it comes to general comprehension of ideas and my ability to communicate with people. I've had several insurance companies, car lots and other sales groups try to hire me in the past when I applied just out of curiosity. Everybody I've talked to seems to think I'd be amazing at sales, but maybe they say that to everybody.

I love law enforcement type work, but the income cap is something I'm just not willing to settle for long term. Have any of you worked this or other commission sales jobs? Can you give me any insight or advice?

Your choice of health insurance as a sales product is definitely brilliant. It will be the single most high demand product of the next decade. Basically it should sell itself.
 
True they make less than U.S. doctor's but they have had raises in the past few years.

The most recent pay award for doctors in the UK's National Health Service (NHS) took effect in the 2023-2024 financial year for most doctors, and was further enhanced by the 2024-2025 pay award for Junior Doctors (also known as Foundation Doctors), with some junior doctors already seeing a pay increase in July 2024 and others with a further uplift in April 2025, though it should be noted that the specific timing and amount of the raise can vary based on doctor grade and location.
There is mental health.
If you have a life threatening emergency you do not call. But other's it's advised to call so they can advise you to either come to ER or an urgent care center.
And last but least in your paragraph of lies, there is dental.

They had one raise in 14 years. They are making less due to inflation and taxes. There is zero mental health for children. For adults its 15 years behind America. There is no dental. You will wait on the phone for hours to get admitted to an ER. Wait times are in months even years, Drs are leaving in large numbers. Covid wiped out their funds. I know the system well. Its a disaster

If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it. There are drawbacks to all sales and the products. The competition is fierce.

I've sold a handful of policies. The money is decent. I'm good at talking to people. I am actually eyeballing opportunities to switch to insurance compliance though. I've realized the shady practices go a lot deeper than I assumed was possible, and I have an eye for it. There are decent people in sales, and for some of them it's actually their job to identify and prevent abuse. I'm not sure how I'd get there yet, but I think that's my goal.

Basically how it works, for anybody interested, is you get the entire year of commission each time you sell a policy. So if I sold you a policy for $100/mo, my commission would be 40% of 1,200 dollars. The commission with this company can go up to 80%, and at some places it's higher. I sold a combination of policies to a house that ended up being about 2,400 in annual premium, which ended up being almost a grand in my pocket off one house. That woulda been almost 2 grand at max commission. In addition to that, that policy will continue paying me monthly after the first year, for as long as the policy stays in force.

This job is very dependent on personal organization and responsibility. Nobody is going to force you to get out there and work. You have to do it yourself.

Compliance is a big issue in this business and if you're interested in going that route you most likely will have to go to work for corporate of which ever company you choose. If you've ever been in law enforcement that might help. What does help with corporate is knowing someone who likes you to help get you in.

I made almost $3,000 today. Most money I've ever made in a day by a good bit.

Must have been an annuity. That's great. Become an expert on one or two things and you'll do good.

I am mulling over whether I am going to retire this year or just change to annuities and leave this health insurance crap behind me. They have changed quite a bit since the last one I sold about 20 years ago.

I got 4 sales in a day. 1 FE, two LTCs and a Medicare supplement.
