Blair took over with a prison population of 64,000 and the Conservatives inherited a prison population of 85,000 from Brown. That is an increase of 21,000 or 33% under Labour.

By June 2024, the prison population stood at 87,360 which was an increase of 2,360 or 11% under the Conservatives.
