The zealotry of New England Puritanism has been, at times, more than profound, of course, such as when a Puritan man was executed for marrying an Indian woman, and when 19 people accused of witchcraft were hanged, and when people killed themselves during the Great Awakening because salvation eluded them. Moments like these have been cause for embarrassment and shame among American Christians, but American Christians have had far greater cause to celebrate their history.
Puritan political and social theory is fundamental to America's founding principles, embedded in the hearts and minds of Americans before, during, and after the founding era. Its erosion in recent decades only coincides with its tolerance for liberalism and a morality contrary to the Scriptures.
If a gay man feels threatened by Christianity, then Christianity is not where the threat originates.
