AllGov - News - Congressman?s Foundation Has Money for Golf Outings, but Not for Scholarships

Frontier Foundation, established seven years ago by Congressman Steve Buyer (R-Indiana) to award scholarships, has yet to help any students, but it has financed Buyer’s golf game. Buyer’s foundation has collected more than $800,000, while not giving out a single scholarship, and prompting a government watchdog group to ask for an investigation of the congressman’s operation.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has written to the IRS to see if it will investigate whether the foundation violated federal tax law by “failing to operate for its stated public purpose of helping needy students and by doing little more than paying for the congressman to play golf with donors with interests before his committee.”

Buyer, who serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has been the beneficiary of donations from pharmaceutical and tobacco businesses. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association (PhRMA), the drug industry’s main lobby, donated $200,000 to Buyer’s foundation.

PhRMA hired Buyer’s son, Ryan, to be its “federal affairs manager.”

In 2003, Buyer created the Frontier Foundation, with the intention of handing out scholarships once the fund reached $100,000. The foundation has now raised $880,000, but Buyer now claims it needs $1 million before it can start giving out assistance. It has been able to pay for fundraising golf outings at luxury locales, however.

Gee, what a surprise.

Scholarships are a form of SOCIALISM........let the freeloading students pull their own weight or flip burgers.

No good Republican ever received help to go to school

If found to be true (though since he has not given out any scholarships, it seems to be), I wonder what kind of punishment he'll receive. :eusa_think:

But remember what that paragon of virtue, Dick Cheney said,"The more educated people become, the more they vote Democrat. Just proves that there can be too much of a good thing!".

If a Democrat did this, they would be just as scummy. Scamming people out of their money and using a charity front to take bribes is low.

He's an idiot, had he supported healthcare he could have gotten another 300 million and put on some real top notch outings !

Why the lie? After all, the 1.4 million dollars a day spent by the Health Care corperations was not supporting real health care reform.

But a DIM didn't do it. Is it that hard for you to condem a republican for wrong doing?

Not at all. A Republican did wrong doing here, he deserves the correct punishment.

What do you think I am by any chance? :eusa_eh:

Ok folks, let's get real. The Congressman wants to raise money for his scholarship foundation. Foundations try to stay in existence in perpetuity, that is their goal. They typically give away no more than 4% of assets per year so that they can be assured of ongoing existence without depletion of assets. The Congressman wants to reach $1,000,000 in donations before he starts giving out approx. $40,000 per year in scholarships. To reach his goal, he needs to raise money. People that have money like to play golf. There is nothing nefarious about this, it is done by people of all political persuasions. I chair golf tournaments every year that help charitable organizations do the same exact thing.

Nice try though!

Let's get real, you're being a partisan hack.

You didn't even bother to read the fucking article.

He'd have $1 million if he didn't spend it all on golf.

lol! This all you guys got left? No one plays more golf on the Tax Payer's dime than your beloved Hopey Changey One does. Nice try though. ;)

I read it, did you? He has a charitable foundation that he formed, not you. He, not you, can decide when and how to disburse the funds as long as he files the appropriate documents, memorializes it legally, and it falls withing the foundations charter. Have your read the charter? I didn't think so. Have you audited the foundations financial records? I didn't think so. DO you have any proof whatsoever that he has done something wrong? I didn't think so. :cuckoo:

If he has done something wrong the investigation will reveal it. Until then this is nothing but a witch hunt.

You seemed to miss the fact he has done nothing with the charity despite promising to give away scholarships over $700,000 ago. He has spent all of the money so far in expenses on golf, not scholarships. Not one dime to scholarships.

CREW is asking the IRS to do exactly that. Though I doubt you will show your face when he is found to be wrongdoing by the IRS.

But do get over yourself, goodness knows you'd have your pitchfork out if Obama did this. Take note, I'd be pissed off if anyone from either side did this. Be consistent.

Hey at least the guy didn't golf his way through a Terrorist attack. So he's got that going for him anyway. Hmm?

I wouldn't be pissed at anyone based on what you've presented. You have an investigation request by a CREW. BFD. When the results come back we'll know the facts. If he engaged in any wrongdoings I will be the first to condemn him.

I have run a charitable foundation. It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of fund raising. The most succesful fund raising events I have done have been Golf Tournaments by far- they raise the most cash for the lowest cost to the charity. Sporting events and Forecast lunches or breakfasts with a popular speaker or celebrity can work too, but they are far more expensive to put on. Fund raising for a charitable organization is hard and mostly thankless work.

In the real world, a foundation with less than $1million in assets doesn't have a very good chance of survival. There are structural costs involved. Most likely he started out with the best of intentions, then when he realized 100K was not enough to fund a proper scholarship, he amended the plan.

No good deed goes unpunished.
