I know most of you don't follow hockey let alone Juniors, but in Canada, this is all we have. Literally citizens hang on to this with all their heart and passion, we don't care so much about human rights, our economy or all the dead piling up in our long term homes, just "win the goal dare byes!"
We had 19 First Round Picks on this team, an insane amount of future NHLers and had dominated the entire tournament against weaker opposition. Our hubris was showing before the game as the usual clowns in our sports media (yes, clowns in media run deep here too) who loved watching Canada beat up on weak, undermanned Germany 16-2, started asking, even before the gold medal game was played if this Team Canada squad was best ever in Juniors history. Even I was starting to buy into these theories. However, the U.S played physical and hard against us and were the best team for two periods, shutting us down in the 3rd.
Losing to America is probably worse for the average Canadian than losing to Russia who is now a shadow of their greatness from the Soviet years. America has beaten us the last 4 times we've met in the gold medal game going back to 2000. Canadians are angry, sad and cursing you. I take my hat off to U.S under dogs who had a lunch pail attitudes and didn't doubt their own talent, even saying so before the game.
I've said often, if we brought this passion for civil liberties, capitalism and business, Canada would be exponentially more wealthy, successful and free.
Confidence carried the day for Team USA at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Before their gold-medal victory against Team Canada Tuesday night in Edmonton, American forward Trevor Zegras said that goaltender Devon Levi hadn't really been tested in the tournament.
"It was honest. There’s nothing wrong with being honest," USA head coach Nate Leaman said of Zegras. "He scored points against every team we played.”
Perhaps Zegras was right.
Canada cruised through a group stage that was far weaker in depth than their American counterparts. Levi, who made 19 saves in Canada's 2-0 loss, hadn't faced an attack like American brought on Tuesday.
