I agree with you the tariffs beyond revenue purposes (to run a government that cannot, hopefully, rely on a personal income tax) are not smart. Immoral? I am not so sure. But certainly in this case not a primary cause for civil war.

The income tax is as immoral, maybe more, than tariffs.

Ironically, the Income Tax up til the early 20th century was unconstitutional.
